Kamal Youssef was an active proponent of art in Egypt and its diaspora for more than seventy years, and is recognised for his interpolation of cultural idioms from across the expanse of art’s history. The characters in the artist’s work are often steeped in melancholy—peering out at the viewer from a prism, whether literal or metaphorical. Too, there is a sensuality to his figurative forms and sculptures, which occasionally veer towards humour, whether literal or metaphorical. His works were often inspired by the avant-garde movements of the time, including Egyptian Surrealism.
