BERTINA LOPES

A painter, sculptor, professor and activist, Bertina Lopes created vibrant paintings and sculptures that combined African and European aesthetics. Her work, deeply rooted in her cultural background, addressed themes of identity, womanhood and tradition. Lopes' art practice was influenced by the political context of her time as she navigated colonialism, independence movements and the search for national identity.
