ETEL ADNAN

Biography

b. 1925, Beirut
d. 2021, Paris

Etel Adnan was a formidable poet, playwright, essayist and visual artist. Diligently developing a sense of home in exile, she derived her creations from the diasporic experience and the gap between language and identity. Her work weaves together written and visual vocabularies and uses abstract paintings as a form of poetic expression, replacing words with intersecting lines, shapes, textures and colours.
