KAMALA IBRAHIM ISHAG

b. 1939, Omdurman, Sudan
Lives and works in Khartoum

Revolutionary artist Kamala Ibrahim Ishag has had a profound impact on the African modern art scene as a prominent member of the Khartoum School. She co-founded the Crystalist group, which challenged traditional Sudanese notions. Ishag's unique artistic language explores themes of spirituality and incarceration, drawing inspiration from nature and Sudanese Zar rituals. Her paintings, featuring distorted women's faces in crystalline shapes, reflect their entrapment and evokes the mutable experiences of women.
