SALOUA RAOUDA CHOUCAIR

Biography

b. 1916, Beirut
d. 2017, Beirut

Saloua Raouda Choucair is one of the pioneering figures in abstract modernism globally. Much of her work was inspired by a deconstruction and re-codification of Islamic geometric forms, designs and architecture that she encountered in Egypt, as well as the abstract and classical painting techniques she observed during her studies in Paris in the 1940s. Her interlocking forms in painting and sculpture suggest infinite possible architectures of existence.
