SONIA BALASSANIAN

b. 1942, Arak, Iran
Lives and works between New York City and Yerevan

Born in Iran to Armenian parents, Sonia Balassanian developed a passion for Armenian poetry and writing. Influenced by Lyrical Abstraction, her artistic style evolved with architectural elements. After the events in Iran in 1979, she shifted towards political art and became a social activist, addressing atrocities of war, human rights and women's emancipation.
